Jo Grey, Master’s Level Therapist

Jo (they/them) is a master’s level therapist who completed their Master’s program at Bryn Mawr College (Graduate School of Social Work and Social Research). They are a nonbinary (trans) person who is neurodivergent, disabled, & has lived with mental illness throughout their life.

Jo is in recovery from addiction, and has been involved in recovery communities for more than 20 years. They are also a therapy client, and have been since they were young, which informs their perspective as a clinician.

Jo is mindful that they benefit from immense privilege as an educated, financially secure, white person, able to conceal vulnerable parts of their identity. They are deeply committed to doing the lifelong work to expose their own biases, unlearn harmful ideologies, and dismantle the racist (& classist) structures in our society and our minds. Jo is dedicated to increasing their cultural humility, and seeking out current research on reducing potentially harmful practices.

Jo has gratitude and reverence for the opportunity to walk with people as they engage in this work. The therapy process is collaborative; clients are invited to explore what they wish to use their session time for, and what’s most important to them. Jo believes that clients hold more wisdom & insight than they realize, and respects that clients are the experts on their own lived experiences. They recognize that each human being, their circumstances & history are unique, and therefore what may be most helpful or effective in their healing process will be as well.

Jo is drawn to therapeutic approaches that are relational, humanistic, & strengths based. They enjoy opportunities to integrate some of the skills, tools, and practices from approaches like CBT, DBT, and ACT, and sharing resources, research & knowledge that may benefit the client. Most importantly, they hope to create a space that feels safe enough for clients to advocate for themselves, practice honesty, & experiment with new ways of being in relationship.

Jo’s areas of interests include: self-compassion; boundaries; attachment; acceptance & change; codependency; spirituality (meaning/purpose, wonder/awe); addiction; hope; identities; grief & loss; healthy sources of peace, ease & pleasure; mindfulness; depression; freedom; connection & community; harm reduction; relationship with ourselves; trauma; growth & healing; authenticity; and practicing the disciplines of joy, fun & humor.

Jo is an animal lover, and a vegan food enthusiast. When they are not engaged in schoolwork, attending recovery meetings, or doing service work, they can be found in their happy place: at home relaxing with an animal friend that they get to enjoy life with.
